Brief Description of the DDSO:

Sunmount Developmental Disabilities Services Office (DDSO) serves the six northern New York counties: Franklin, Essex, Clinton, Hamilton, Jefferson and St. Lawrence. In partnership with the local government units and non-profit private sector agencies, Sunmount DDSO is involved with the planning, development, funding, technical support, quality assurance and direct operations of a wide variety of community-based residential, day and at home support services. Many services are provided by private sector agencies supported by Sunmount, while others are directly provided by the State of New York through Sunmount DDSO.

HOUSING OPTIONS: Housing options include the campus based Center for Intensive Treatment (CIT), Regional Behavioral Intensive Treatment Unit (RBITU), and Local Intensive Treatment Unit (LIT). Together with the private agencies, Sunmount's community based residential services range from supportive independent living opportunities to a variety of small group home settings.

DAY SERVICES: Based on individualized need, day services can include educational, vocational, therapeutic, habilitative, competitive employment, supportive employment, affirmative businesses, and/or leisure time activities. Specific programs are developed, funded, provided and monitored for each person served within Sunmount's six county district.

FAMILY SUPPORT: Sunmount DDSO has designed, and continues to enhance, a system of service that provides individualized help for families, provides respite, and assists in improving the quality of life for everyone Sunmount serves. To better serve persons with special needs, Sunmount offers a wide range of clinical and supportive programs for the developmentally disabled population and their families. Crisis intervention services are available in the home, work and/or school setting for those individuals with behavioral difficulties.

SENIOR COMPANIONS: Senior citizens of limited means have the opportunity to earn money through this program. These seniors participate in the support of developmentally disabled individuals at a variety of program and residential sites within the Sunmount catchment area.

FORENSIC SERVICES: The Center for Intensive Treatment (CIT) is a comprehensive, secure treatment facility, located on the Sunmount campus in Tupper Lake, serving individuals who are developmentally disabled and who are involved with the criminal justice system, or have extremely challenging behaviors. The CIT is a one of a kind, self contained campus, consisting of four homes and a program building enclosed within an eight acre secure perimeter located on 37 acres of land. Specially trained staff provide a highly structured treatment, residential and day service program. State-of-the-art technology and security offer enhanced treatment opportunities for this unique population within the secure setting.

Sunmount DDSO's Regional Behavioral Intensive Treatment Unit (RBITU) is located within a separate secure perimeter on the Sunmount campus. This program is one of three regional units operated by the New York State Office for People With Developmental Disabilities (OPWDD) dedicated to serving persons in need of a secure treatment setting. Treatment programs offer clinical services, ranging from basic living skills to intensive sex offender therapy and relapse prevention services.

The Sunmount DDSO Local Intensive Treatment unit (LIT) is a specialized Intermediate Care Facility program designed for individuals who are developmentally disabled and who are involved with the criminal justice system, or have very challenging behaviors. Located on the Sunmount campus, it is one of five LITs in New York State. Individuals are served in both a residential and day program. The LIT is a critical link in a continuum of Forensic programs, with the focus on initiating clinical community-based trials for crystallizing the success of the treatment services the individual has received and fine tuning treatment intervention based on these trials.
