Brief Description of the DDSO:
The Queens Developmental Disabilities Services Office provides a wide range of services to individuals with developmental disabilities and to their families within the borough of Queens. The Bernard M. Fineson Developmental Center, with locations in Queens Village and Howard Beach, is an Intermediate Care Facility providing care, education and training to adults and children with developmental disabilities and multiple handicapping conditions. Services are provided 24 hours a day by an interdisciplinary treatment team.
The DDSO also operates Community Residences and Individual Residential Alternatives which provide a group home setting for individuals with developmental disabilities. These residential alternatives enable the individuals to participate more fully in the community. The DDSO also operates an extensive Family Care Program which provides individuals with disabilities the opportunity to be part of a family and participate in community life.
The DDSO is an integral part of a community-based services system designed to help families who care for their developmentally disabled family member at home. Working in partnership with approximately 70 voluntary agencies, a wide range of services are available to assist consumers as they participate in the world around them. Some of the community-based services that are available in Queens include: crisis intervention; information and referral; case management; diagnostic services; day program placement; respite services; home care services; medical and clinical services; recreational services; early intervention services; and in-home residential habilitation.
